The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat | A Review By Om & Away

Whenever I think of a good retreat to getaway in, it has to fit 3 of my criteria. First of which being relaxing for the mind, the second pampering for the body and the third of it that my soul has to feel nourished after.

Singapore life, even as a Yoga Instructor and Content Creator, gets pretty much hectic everyday, I crave a proper getaway once in a while. I love to travel to the not so far places just for a few days and have been delighted about what beautiful and luxurious finds are so close to our Sunny Singapore.

Thanks to the team at Om & Away and Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, I got to take my mom and brother on the trip to be pampered for a few days.

The flight to Ipoh airport takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes, and this was just a tad further then the flight to Kuala Lumpur. Take a 30 minutes transfer from the airport to the Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat and you will have pretty much arrived in paradise.

I was greeted by the friendly staff, straight away recognising me and was asked to hit the gong, to symbolize my arrival. This to me was quite a special ritual as it meant dropping social media, emails and the million to-do lists I have and just to be present at the resort and to just enjoy myself. We were then given cold towels and a tea and lead to the Pomelo Restaurant for some small delights and coffee while they prepared our room (as we arrived quite a bit earlier as to the timing I was supposed to).

Once the room was prepared, we were given a beautiful tour around the resort by their operations manager, Raymond who had such sincere hospitality and had every detail of my stay planned well. We arrived at the Garden Villa, the biggest of all the villas and did our check in there. Seamless.

The Villa featured a private pool and canopy to chill and read if you fancied a little privacy, your own geothermal hotsprings, you could dip before a shower and a beautiful space outside the room where you can have meals should you want to.

The Room

I believe that good service goes the extra mile into the details of the guests experience, and there were a few highlights for the room which gave me that feel good feeling.

You get to choose your type of pillow. There is a case in which you get to choose the type of pillow for a good night’s rest, with full health benefit write ups just below the sample of the pillow pack. You get to choose from contour, bamboo, ginko, microfibre, buckwheat and foam pillow. I tried the buckwheat pillow and absolutely loved the many naps I took in the day.

In the corner of the bedside table, there is a nice welcome plate filled with chocolate and a chocolate frame with a chocolate picture of me and my mom.

Wellness Highlights in the Resort

Being a Hotsprings Resort, the Banjaran has just too many things I love about it and let me just recall as many of the highlights.

Firstly, what is a wellness resort without an amazing spa. I got to enjoy a 3 hours signature Adam and Eve Spa treatment, followed by a one-hour facial treatment, and this was just an unparalleled spa experience that I absolutely want to go for again. The 3 hours signature Adam and Eve spa treatment included, a feet welcome bath followed by a really nice hair mask and head massage. After our heads were wrapped with the nourishing scalp and hair goodness, we were led to the bed for a nice traditional massage. The beautiful therapist had just the right pressure throughout the experience and it left me honestly wanting more. After this was done, I had a nice natural body scrub down before rejuvenating my body and soul with a nice rose bath accompanied with fine tea. The facial used one of the best smelling brands of essential oil based products by  the Aromatherapy Associates. Leaving my face shining and smelling the best right after the treatment.

The Resort featured 3 beautifully done up caves. The first in which was a steam cave; perfect to meditate while having a nice sweat to give your entire body a beautiful glow. This was really special as the steam cave was huge and just brilliant to spend a cold night in. The second cave was a huge meditation cave, in which had a few holes of natural light which was the best spot to get a bit of space and to also have a mindful session, or to simply just hold space.

The last but definitely not least, was a crystal cave, in which I got to try a nice session of Yoga Breathing with their yoga master, also named Yoga. This was great for me, as I usually teach, the best form of practice was to become a student again and to learn something new 😊perfect to meditate while having a nice sweat to give your entire body a beautiful glow. Not too far from the caves, were the natural geothermal hot springs in which I got to really enjoy and soak in, not only the beautiful view but my skin to soak up all the natural goodness (sounds like my skin will just shine when I get back to urbanisation).

There are Yoga classes and breathing technique classes held daily, or even private sessions to be booked, and this just added another layer to the choices of what you could complete your wellness experience here.

Nutrition and Food

I’d have to say that the menu in both restaurants have a wide variety food- from the conscious eater, all the way to the luxurious dinner, Banjaran Hot springs Retreat left me spoilt for choice. I’ve had the privilege of having Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Pomelo Restaurant and a beautiful dining experience at Jeff’s Cellar and it was beyond expectations.

The staff and service given was top notch, adding even more to the dining experience.

Pomelo Restaurant featured a more casual and effortless approach to dining, with a beautiful scenery (of course). With their ala-cart menu in the day till night, everything we ordered was in good portion and tasted amazing. A huge shout out to the Wagyu Skewers, which I personally did not have enough of! In the evening, I had a few course dining, and I must say that the menu had everything planned out, from the order of the dishes, to the richness of taste and flavour in the soups and main courses. Here I really enjoyed their lobster bisque soup and the Tuna which I chose for my main.

I had one of my favourite experiences to remember dining at Jeff’s Cellar. This was really the highlight of the trip, of course other then the beautiful ambience of the place. Ambience in Jeff Cellar was spectacular. From obviously feeling super special dining in the cave, the opera music made my evening way more special.

We were treated to the Special Menu, The Chairman’s Favourite, which featured a progressive 8 course menu. It was overwhelming, and this I kid you not. The featured main I had was the Japanese A5 grade Wagyu beef, which up till today, I’d never forget. The tenderness, freshness and taste of the beef was unparalleled with anything beef I’ve tried. Of course, being the sweet tooth me, the dessert was the Valrhona Chocolate Sphere- made with pistachios gelato, berry crumbles, caramel sauce and of course a whole lot of chocolate. This night for me and my mom was magical.

Of course, what I ate was so satisfying for my soul (life’s a balance). We were given green juices filled with the green goodness and nutritions in the day as well, while we were detoxing with the wellness programme, this added just that amazing touch and detail to our day.

What I Loved

I’ve been to many 5 star hotels and resorts, and to the ones I really love, its all about the details. From the choice of pillows, to the surprise chocolate photo frame, the team at Banjaran Hot Springs Retreat has thought about all the little details to make your stay even more comfortable. The feel of the place was spa paradise, and to be honest, happy me did not want to leave.

Insider Tip

I always believe in treating the hotel staff well, and they’ll go the extra mile of being nice back to you. Just like Ellen says, be nice to one another. 😉

Love,
Brandon
